What is Sports Massage?

Sports massage is targeted massage therapy focused on preventing and treating injuries and supporting muscle recovery. Depending on the client’s needs, different techniques are used to reduce muscle tension and improve joint mobility and range of motion. Although it’s called sports massage, this therapy is for all types of people and all fitness levels.

Our trained therapists use various techniques including deep tissue massage, trigger point therapy, stretching and Swedish massage. Unlike traditional relaxation massages, sports massage is often more intense and tailored to specific areas of the body under stress from physical activity.

Is Sports Massage only for athletes?

Despite the name, Sports Massage is beneficial for anyone who suffers from muscle tension, pain, muscle imbalances, joint pain or tension due to some form of activity. It could be from exercising, lifestyle or your job.

Sports Massage is ideal for:

PERSISTENT TENSION AND PAIN
For anyone dealing with stubborn, long-standing tension in areas like the back, shoulders, and legs, this massage provides relief where you need it most. It’s perfect for chronic muscle tightness that just won’t go away by itself.

OFFICE WORKERS
Reduces tension from poor posture and long hours at a desk. Office workers often experience neck, back, and shoulder strain due to prolonged sitting and repetitive movements (like typing) leading to muscle fatigue and tension.

REPETITIVE STRAIN
Some jobs or lifestyles are exposed to repetitive motions which cause strain on the joints and muscle groups. Sports massage helps with relieving the affected muscle group by releasing tension, improving circulation and encouraging healing.

ANYONE WHO WORKS OUT
Relieves muscle stiffness and soreness, and speeds up recovery. Helps you enjoy your workouts when your muscles are well maintained and restored.

RUNNERS
Helps improve flexibility and prevent injury in the legs, hips, and calves.

WEIGHTS LIGHTING
Eases tightness in muscles from intense lifting and supports recovery.

How to know if a Sports Massage would be helpful for you?

If you feel restricted in your movement by tight muscles

If you have a recent muscle strain or experience tenderness in the tissue near an injury

If your muscles are sore from exercise or repetitive action

If you want to speed up recovery for better performance at your favourite sport

Is a Sports Massage different from a Deep Tissue Massage?

Sports massage and deep tissue massage are different, though they share some similarities. Here’s how they compare:

Sports Massage

Deep Tissue Massage

Focuses on Performance & Recovery – Helps improve flexibility, prevent injuries, and speed up recovery after intense workouts or injuries.
Focuses on General Muscle Health – While it helps with recovery, it’s not as specific as a sports massage.
Targets specific muscle groups - Primarily designed for athletes, active individuals, and those experiencing repetitive strain from work or lifestyle, focusing on specific muscle groups used in their activities.
Ideal for Chronic Pain & Muscle Tension – Works on deeper muscle layers to relieve knots, stiffness, and tension. Beneficial for anyone dealing with muscle pain, postural issues, or stress-related tension.
Uses a Combination of Techniques – Incorporates deep tissue work, stretching and trigger point therapy.
Uses Slow, Firm Pressure – Targets adhesions and tight muscles with slow strokes and deep pressure.

Complementary Therapy with Sports Massage

professional stretching

Medi Stretch (Professional Stretch Therapy)

Whether you live an active lifestyle, or have had a lifetime of not exercising, Medi Stretch is important for you. Medi Stretch is Therapist Assisted Stretching, it does more than just deepen the basic stretch. With the assistance of a therapist, a greater number of muscles and fascia can be more effectively stretched and activated across their full range of motion.

Meridian Flush

During this TCM inspired therapy, the therapist uses a specialized wooden tool to relieve tension, knots and decrease pain. This technique is helpful in breaking up adhesions that have formed in muscles and fascia leading to improved flexibility.

The therapist will gently, but firmly, roll the curved edge of the wooden tool across your skin with short or long strokes, this process is called “flushing”. It helps release tight fascia, muscle adhesions and improve lymph flow. Meridian Flush begins with mild pressure, activating the capillaries beneath the skin’s surface and pressure is gradually increased until it gets to the source of the pain.

Red Light Therapy

Red Light Therapy uses low-level wavelengths to penetrate deep into the skin, promoting cellular repair, reducing inflammation, and improving circulation. It enhances muscle recovery, relieves tension, and accelerates healing by increasing oxygen flow and collagen production. Also, it helps alleviate pain, reduce stiffness, and support overall relaxation, making it a powerful complementary therapy for enhanced wellness.
